Passages from Text-"This is danger like none they have ever faced before....Midnight why did you tell our secrets?" Page- #5 Comments and Questions- What the heck are the secrets? I'm like halfway through the book and I have no idea what they're talking about! *Grumbles angrily* Now I have to go back two books apparently. But yay, Midnights back!
You seem to be enjoying your book, gigi. If you don´t know what ¨the Secrets¨ are, try predicting what it could be, it could be so obvious, but also hidden.
Looks like you're really enjoying that book, and I know that it seems so frustrating to not know what the secrets are but like any good book, you'll know soon enough.
Trash - By Andy Mulligan “Nor do i know how much of it is stupp, but on a bad day it seems like most of it, breathing it, sleeping beside it - well...maybe one day you’ll find ‘something nice’. oh yes.”
Pg. 5
(E) From the start of the book the character has been very pessimistic. he never believes anything good will come out of anything he does. Whenever someone says that something good might happen to his life he makes a sarcastic comment and doesn't believe it. He seems like one of those people that are just disinterested with everything they do and doesn't want to do anything at all. Of course until something good happens to him he will probably stay like that for a while.
What is the character talking about when he says, it. I agree this is a good quote that makes me want to read the book and find out more about what is going on it the story.
“I’d known already, very well, that I was no longer part of what was considered a traditional family unit. But their stares confirmed it, just incase I’d missed the memo.”
PG#: 6
Response:
I think that Mclean is thinking about another move coming up soon because she moves to different places very frequently. From the sound of the book so far it seems that it’s only her and her dad and they’ve moved 20 miles from where they had lived before. In the first few pages she goes over all the things she has noticed overtime after moving so much, she thinks this move will be just as short as the other ones. This quote shows that she doesn’t live with both her parents and in this town this may be a very odd thing to see.
So the odd thing at for this town is it like everyone lives with both their parents. So everyone at this town everyone lives with both parents? What happened to her mother? Can there be other things that the town people are finding odd about her, or is it just the family thing that is odd.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Page 1 Passage: “Nana looked so mad that Mariam feared the jinn would enter her mother's body again. But the jinn didn't come, not that time. Instead, Nana grabbed Mariam by the wrists, pulled her close, and, through gritted teeth, said, "You are a clumsy little harami. This is my reward for everything I've endured. An heirloom-breaking, clumsy little harami."” (C)- This passage of the book represents the cultural and religious aspect of the book. Since the book takes place in Afghanistan, and the religion in Afghanistan is predominantly Islam, the terms that were used in this passage is directly associated with the religion. I was able to relate and understand some of of the words and expressions that were used since the characters in the book and I share the same beliefs. The “jinn” is considered to be the devil. Some people in the Islamic religion believe that the devil has the ability to take control of a persons body, aka possession. It is an expression that is used quite often describing someone that seems extremely angry to the point where they just do not seem like themselves. A word that I was able to understand instantly was the word “harami.” It is also a word commonly used in the Arabic language with the same exact meaning in Farsi.
This book seems like a good read! I like how you put translations so that we could understand the full meaning of the quote. I think I might actually end up reading this book because I can also relate to the cultural and religious background. Since this quote is n the first page it seems like it starts off as a rough book.
I so want to read this! Hosseini is the writer of the Kite Runner, correct? Is thi a non fiction story? Because being possess by a Jinn doesn't sound like fun haha. A'udhu Billahi!
Pages from the text: :- I'll still be loyal to my Clan and I won't fall behind in my duties." Pg. 25 Comments and questions: I like the way of how he is still being loyal. But why is he trying to say?
Try to elaborate. when you asked the question try to give possible answers to your question or try to foreshadow what will happen next through this question.
Quote: 'Altogether she was quite convinced of Harriet Smith's being exactly the young friend she wanted-exactly something which her home required.' Page Number: 24 Comments: Emma- the main character, who thought this- lost her mother when she was younger, Emma looked up to her. They were both equal in intelligence, which made them closer, and when she passed she lost someone who shared what she felt and thought. Maybe Harriet, will be the one who can, not replace, but fill the emptiness that is in Emma, and in her home.
Do you know how old Emma is right now? I do agree that she could fill in the emptiness in her life. Mothers are really important part of everyone's lives but I feel like girls are more attached to their mothers and losing one at a young age would probably be very tough. It's always good to have a female figure while you're growing up. :)
I feel like the author uses this death of a close family member to connect to any readers that possibly lost a loved and is trying to help them deal with the loss and to show the development of the character and even be foreshadowing how shes going to later in the book
Page 17. "I need to find Teddy! Where is he? I spin around, suddenly frantic, like the time I lost him for ten minutes at the grocery store. I'd been convinced he'd been kidnapped.Of course, it had turned out that he'd wandered over to inspect the candy aisle. When I found him, I hadn't been sure whether to hug him or yell at him."
(E): After the car accident she goes and looks for her parents, and has found them all dead and everything. But she starts to freak out even more when she realizes that she cannot find her brother. It shows how much she cares and loves her family, especially her little brother. Like using a flashback to relate to a time she lost her brother at the grocery store, and not knowing whether she should hug him or yell at him, shows that she was so relived that she found her brother, that she wanted to hug him, and that she was so scared and worried that she didn't know where he went that she wanted to yell at him. This passage develops her relationship between her and her little brother.
"My older brother, Caleb, stands in the aisle, holding a railing above his head to keep himself steady. We don't look alike. He has my father's dark hair and hooked nose and my mother's green eyes and dimpled cheeks. When he was younger, that collection of features looked strange, but now it suits him. If he wasn't Abnegation, I'm sure the girls at school would stare at him. He also inherited my mother's talent for selflessness. He gave his seat to a surly Candor man on the bus without a second thought."
Page 3
(E) There seems to be a certain type of group that belong in each faction. The narrator's brother seems to fit into the faction considering that if he wasn't part of that faction, I am pretty sure he wouldn't be that way. When he gives up his seat to the Candor man, he does it without a second thought. The Candor faction seems to have more respect than the Abnegation faction to start off. Caleb seems like a really nice person, who doesn't get in the way of others.
Something like fate by Susane Colasanti "It's interesting how you can know someone for a long time, and then one day you just see them in this whole different way." Pg. 11 I think the author is trying to say that people can change over time mostly to fit in, and they change everything about them because other people do it too, and she talks about that when she sees this group of people that she used to hang out with, she realizes what they really are and that she's really glad she changed and became more focused on what really matters like college rather than parties and fitting in.
I completely agree with you on this one. People do change over time, changing to fit in just because that's the way society wants us to be or thinks we are.
The character has very little respect for herself. She drinks at a young age and does things that she shouldn't be doing. It really surprises me that her dad is ok with her acting like this. If it was my dad he would never allow me to do any of this, for once in my life I would be grounded.
That is shocking that a parent has such little concern for what their child does, but that's just how some people are. But it's obviously her fault too. She's responsible for her own actions and she will have to face the consequences, not matter what they may be.
Some parents are just like that. And drinking at a young age doesn't mean she doesn't have respect for herself. I know parents who are fine with their children or other people at their house doing much worse than that.
Some parents allow their kids to do whatever they want and they come out as potheads or drunks later in life or sometimes they're parents allow them to just drink and stuff.
"She had never been a really attractive women, small and dowdy with dull eyes and pinched lips that never smiled" Pg.5 (E) No one wanted to talk to her, she seemed creepy and she most likely was a ugly woman. Because she doesn't smile i would assume that she is very depressed. She doesn't have any family so she foster a bad kid. I believe that she doesn't have a family because of her ugliness.
¨Look for me by moonlight¨ by Mary Downing Hahn Quote pg#1 ¨I cried and begged him to stay, I swore I´d be good, but nothing I said or did made any difference. Dad packed his bags and his books and kissed me goodbye.¨ I love you, Cynda,¨ he said ¨ No matter where I live, I´ll always be your father, and you´ll always be my daughter. Nothing will change.¨ Of course it wasn´t true. A year later, Dad moved to Maine...¨
I think that Mary just gave a brief information on the narrators background, her parents divorced when she was still a little girl, this piece of information foreshadows into the future, because most of the actions that the narrator will take, and all the decisions she will make are a result of the problems she faced as a child. I believe that when a little kid is left behind by someone they love, they would do anything when they grow up just to hold on to another person that they love in the future, sometimes it also causes them to rebel and make bad decisions as a sign of they feelings that they have suppressed inside them.
" 'No' he said, his words rising up like a ghost, thin and pale and empty. ' Nothing's ever going to change.' " (R) I like how he uses a simile to compare his Dad's words to a ghost. Show's how his Dad's voice may be dark? Or with uncertainty.
Breaking up with someone that like to take their time in a relationship seems kind of harsh. I would really appreciate it that a guy takes is time with me. Alex seems like the kind of girl that wants to use guys for her entertainment. She is really making herself look really bad and easy.
"Evil Star" Anthony Horowitz Quote "She wished now that Matt had never came into her life" Pg#8 Response (P) She is going to try and find Matt and murder him since he ruined her life and now she lives in a home that is trash and her house smells like a sewer.
Wow...well she's a little....dramatic....Murders a little extreme for any situation, no matter what he did to her. I would've settled for just a nail bat beating.
Henry V by Shakespeare Page 7 "The strawberry grows underneath the nettle, And wholesome berries thrive and ripen best Neighbored by fruit of baser quality; And so the Prince obscured contemplation Under the veil of wildness, which (no doubt) Grew like summer grass, fastest by night, Unseen, let crescive in his faculty."
R- This passage is true not only of Prince Henry, but of people in general. The best people can be found among even the worst of groups, and they develop their greatness while no one watches, only to emerge from the group great and enlightened.
Passage From The Text "I know what they are think she whispers their thoughts into my ear. I can hear them. Clearly. Constantly. “If I ever look like that, just kill me." Her name is skinny. I don't know how long she's been sitting there on my shoulder, whispering her messages. She popped up when I was about ten, when I started gaining weight after my mom died"
Pg.3
Comments & Questions (R) Cooner uses this quote to start her book "skinny." Reading it I under stand that the main character is overweight and she has been struggling with it since her mom died. Already the author creates a sense of pity for the reader. The main character is probably depressed, and just takes it all out on food. This quote sums up the main idea of the story "Skinny."
I don't necessarily think she's taking it out on food. She eats when she gets the feels, food is her escape, because she does mention that she has these weight struggles after the passing of her mother. Which leaves me wondering: Where's the father in this situation? Does this mean she has or will develop an eating disorder? Is there anybody in her life she can possibly talk to about these things?? keep reading. :D
"Just like that, in the hurried moments between announcements, I wrapped up and put away sixteen years of my life and was born again, all before first period even began." Pg.6 Because she's moving every few months or so she realizes she can be whoever she wants to be because at the end of those few months she'll be gone and she can start all over again. Honestly I'm jealous, I would love to do that.
I like the authors figurative language. "I wrapped up and put away sixteen years of my and was born again." You picked an excellent quote because it alone makes me want to give the book a chance. What's her reason for moving? Is she forced to do so? Does her family have something to do with it?
ready player one by ernest cline PG7 PFT:"three hidden keys open three secret gates wherein the errant will be tested for worthy traits and those with the skill to survive these straits will reach the end where the prize awaits" CAQ: this is a major quote from the story from hallidays will that brings to mind three questions: >where are the keys and the gates >what are the worthy traits? >who has the skill to survive this challenge? “My sister, Kyra, and I see things before they happen. Not entire events -- snapshots, like piece of a puzzle. Kyra sees some of the pieces and I see the others. If we’re lucky, we can fit the puzzle together and guess what’s coming. On the day of the accident, Kyra knew something bad was going to happen. She tried to warn me, but I wouldn’t listen. I didn’t even try. That’s the part that haunts me most.
Page: 4
Response:
Lynnie, the main character, was switching job locations. She was switching to a mall, the mall where ‘the accident’ happened. The story brings you to a flashback of her driving to the same mall. Her mother was with her because she only had her license for a few weeks. She wrecked the car and there was a tragic loss. The loss of her mother. Lynnie goes not a day without remembering this tragic event and missing her mother.
I got excited for a moment when I read the name "Kyra". Reminded me of the book Gathering Blue (sequel to the Giver), which I read a few years back lol.
Are the sisters Lynnie and Kyra consistantly psychic? Does the book reveal or explain what can they see before they happen? Is it kind of how Raven Baxter can see the future? Bakr next to me says he rates the book 5/10, so hopefully you find it a lot more entertaining than him:P
Killer Switch Chris Lynch Passage From Text "He says he's nice to her for my sake, because I seem to have some kind of unfathomable warm spot in my heart for the girl" Pg.3 Comments and Questions Well I don't know what unfathomable but it seem to me that the grandfather watches out for his grand daughter, Lucy, and his grandson, Daniel, cares a great deal for his sister to defend her like that.
The Hard Way - a Jack Reacher Novel By Lee Child Page 1 "Jack Reacher ordered espresso, double, no peel, no cube, foam cup, no china, and before it arrived at his table he saw a man's life change forever. Not that the waiter was slow. Just that the move was slick. So slick, Reacher had no idea what he was watching. It was just an urban scene, repeated everywhere in the world a billion times a day. A guy unlocked a car and got in and drove away. That was all. But that was enough."
(E) This is the very first paragraph of the book. Suspenseful, right? Well, it sets up our setting well. It's obvious that Reacher is in a city, in a coffee shop, ordering his morning cup of coffee. It also sets up Reacher as a character. It shows he has a keen, alert, and very analytic mind, which I assume is typical for Army Military Police Detectives/Investigators (Reacher's former occupation.). However, this paragraph also put a LOT of focus on the car. Something tells me that this car is going to be an important piece of the plot the deeper we delve into the book...
Pg.13 : "The blood was pumping through me, though. I could almost hear my body start flow and wake up." "I could hear taking steps, coming toward me. I tried curling up, tried to get away. Everything was heavy. Slow. But my brain was working and my heart was racing."
Since the story started, the author has kept this sense of suspense and fear. This and all the questions unanswered are what has made me want to keep reading. The author uses a lot of imagery, and details for me to see exactly whats going on in the story. Also, I believe this will be a great book because I can feel the girl's emotions since she has been kidnapped.
I've read this book before and I loved it! Even though it made me cry a couple of times... You mentioned that you can relate to to the girl's emotions, that's very interesting. You know the book is good when you can make up the images of what is happening in your mind. Keep reading it, you'll enjoy it! :)
I like this quote because Lucy Christopher described the plot very well, I can really feel the fear from the character. She probably made a really exciting plot in the book.
I really like this quote, the author uses great descriptive detail to describe what the character is feeling. It really makes you want to read this book just to find out what the character is so afraid of.
"Pathfinder" by Orson Scott Card Passage from the Text: "So all who had survived the first terrible years of worldwide cold and famine dedicated themselves to building two identical ships. One would crawl out into space percent of lightspeed, with generation after generation of future colonists living growing old and dying inside a closed ecosystem. The other ship..would travel seven years away from the solar system and then make a daring leap into theoretical physics."
Pg. 17
Commentary: The weird thing is, this isn't even the main story. There are bits like this written at the beginning of every chapter, with the inclusion of the first one, where we are introduced to the main character, Rigg, who can see the the paths that have been taken objects, animals and people, hence the name, "Pathfinder". The side story at the beginning of the chapters has me interested in when this and the main story will finally combine.
"Leo remembered what Nemesis had said about Echo and Narcissus: Perhaps they'll teach you a lesson. Leo had thought she'd meant Narcissus, but now he wondered if the real lesson for him was Echo - invisible to her brethren, cursed to love someone who didn't care for her..."
Page: 99
Leo is a demigod and he's trying to deal with the fact that everything he does makes things worse and sometimes is the cause for his friends hardships, but he tries his best to help. He's having a crisis where he's feeling left out in everything but he's starting to realize that even though he's not appreciated he should try his best to help as best as he can.
Passages from the text: "Love, pictures of us smiling, making faces, kissing around the town one sunny afternoon. Joy, ticket sales from time shared together at plays, movies, concerts. Happiness after while, I put the box away, the love, joy, and happiness right along with it."
Page:8-9
Comments & Questions: (R) Lisa Schroeder uses parallelism to show readers that the details of Brooklyn's emotion when she organized the box fulls of memories of her and her boyfriend. Brooklyn's feelings convey that love can end in tragedy and all you are left with is the memory of that person. When I read that passage, I made a connection with Brooklyn that I feel her sadness and pain. Even though her boyfriend left her, she is still in love with him.
I really like this quote because it gives you an insight on what their relationship was like when they were together. I can sense that they had a great relationship.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold Page 6 - "My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer. My murderer believed in old-fashioned things like eggshells and coffee grounds, which he said his own mother had used. My father came home smiling, making jokes about how the man's garden might to be beautiful but it would stink to high heaven once a heat wave hit."
Response: I've only read two chapters of this book and I am already in love with it. I thought this quote was interesting and important because the way that the main character, Susie, describes the man who killed her, in a very calmed, sarcastic way. So far this book has made me think of many things. How can there be people with such disgusting thoughts and hurt innocent people? Who could ever think that the quiet man with a beautiful garden that didn't socialize that much, could be the murderer of a young girl that had much more to live? Incredibly hard to believe how just a small quote can change your thoughts about everyone and everything. Trust seems to not exist anymore.
WEREling by: Steve Feasey Passage: "He realized that he had no recollection of going to bed last night. He struggled to remember, small, tight lines creasing his forehead as he tried to piece together what could have happened to cause him to wake up feeling like this. But there was nothing." Page:1 Comments an Questions: (Q) In this passage the author uses a lot of descriptive details to really pull you in and make you want to know more about this main character Trey Laporte. It makes you want to ask the question what could of happened to Trey that would make him wake up with no recollection? From the passage I can infer that something really bad has happened to him and that it wasn't a very good night.
I really like the descriptive details that I felt the unknown fear he has. All the unanswered questions made me want to try to read the book. I want to find out what really happened to cause his fear.
In this quote I can see the author uses a lot of description, that helps me understand what Trey is going through. Keep reading so we can figure out what happens to Trey Laporte.
Where She Went by Gayle Forman " You're talking to yourself, so who the hell cares? I reply, popping a couple of pills...Me alone in a soundproof booth. Don't overthink it, I tell myself. This is how you record in a technologically advanced studio. The only problem is, i felt the same way a few nights ago... I felt alone as i do in this booth."
Page:4 & 8
Response: I feel like Adam, the main character of the story, is being portrayed as having a serious inner conflict with himself. His use of diction reflects on the depressing mentality he has. As opposed to how one might think, his rockstar life is rather more depressing than a lively one. This mood and tone of the story makes me think about what the upcoming rising action or the climax will be. Through struggles and conflicts he's having, Adam definitely seems to be depicted as a character that will soon make a drastic change or impact on the plot of this story.
"Burned" by Ellen Hopkins Quote: "When you were little, endure your parents' warnings, then wait for them to leave the room, pry loose protective covers and consider inserting some metal object into an electrical outlet? Did you wonder if for once you might light up the room?" Page 1.
(E) This is how the book starts, the very first paragraph and right off the bat the narrator is talking about basically hurting herself very badly to the point of even killing herself. This opening paragraph is not only quite shocking, but makes the reader question what's going to happen. Is the narrator depressed and wanting to die? Are they already dead and this book talks about what lead up to that event?
"Sherlock Holmes: The adventures of Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Pg.1 : "Suddenly there was the momentary gleam of a light up in the direction of the ventilator, which vanished immediately, but was succeeded by a strong smell of burning oil and heated metal." "The instant that we heard it, Holmes sprang from the bed, struck a match, and lashed furiously with his cane at the bell-pull."
The first page of the story explains how Sherlock Holmes is very aware and open minded of his surroundings, always thinking something will happen when he least expects it. Holmes uses his sense of smell, hearing, and sight to focus and wonder what is near him, while using his sense of touch and sometimes even taste to solve a mystery.
Pg. 15: "Hum! Born in New Jersey in the year 1858. Contralto-hum! La scala, Hum! Prima donna Imperial Opera of Warsaw-yes! Retired from operatic stage-ha! Living in London-quite so!"
Irene Adler, an acquaintance of Holmes, is being looked up in the index of Dr. Watson to view her information. Why would she be analyzed by Sherlock Holmes himself, unless there's a point of interest between them? Could she be involved in a crime? and if so, why would he be so descriptive? They must know each other.
Procession of the Dead-Darren Shan Page 1 "Stories about The Cardinal were as legion as the corpses buried in the city's concrete foundations........ The president who spent forty days and nights prostrate on the door steps of party central in supplication for having angered the cardinal."
(E) The narrator really goes into details about "the cardinal" You can conclude from the reader that he is a well respected and feared person in the world. The great example would be the president on his door steps. Many people fear him and are terribly scared of him. He has everybody on his feet. He is known for a lot of murders. He has a lot of power. He is a character of interest.
"burned" By:Ellen Hopkins "One day I brought a stck of books mostly banned in decent LDS households, to the check out counter. Ms.Rose looked up and smiled. You are quite the reader, Pattyn. You'll be a writer one day. I'll venture. I shook my head, "Not me who'd want to read anything I have to say?"" (R)Reflection: When I was in sixth grade my english teacher was this really American looking teacher, blonde hair blue eyes and everything. Her eyes though were so interesting though, they were bittersweet looking. She always looked sad. I had difficulty in her class because all we ever did was WRITE. Although she alwaysencouraged me to write and said I would be a good writer, but I disagree. Thre are very few people in this world who see things that others don't. It's hard to explain. For example one day we were working on cover art for books we were writing, and this kid was going to throw away this old broken and dull color pencil, but she stopped them from throwing it in the trash. She said, "This is a beautiful color. It maybe warn out and old but you can still use it.There is no reason to throw away something like this away." she saw things differently. Which also brings a quote by Robert Bresson to mind: “Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen.”
Passages from the text: "Once again dark hallways and no one to help me. I run, looking for a door outside. I can't run as fast as I want to. He's behind me. Running. Chasing me. He moves toward me. Closer. And closer. Then, he's there. In front of me. He lunges for me and I scream his name, "Gabe!"
Page: 59-61
Comments & Questions: (Q) Brooklyn got chasing by Gabe's ghost who was her friend. Brooklyn was running away in her dream. I got lots of questions in my head when I read this quote. Why would she want to run away in her dream? Why did Gabe's ghost chase her? What did he want from her? Why it wasn't Lucca, her boyfriend, visiting her dreams. I think later on the plot will be really interesting.
pg:2 "People who think dying is the worst thing don't know a thing about life."Lily
Lily, is the main character in the story she talks about how life leads her a miserable life with her father T. Ray and so on.She also says her life became miserable when her mother, Deborah, had died. Lily blames herself for Deborah’s death, although she is not sure if she can believe T. Ray’s claim that it was her fault. *This is an important quote because first of all Lily’s life has been seriously affected by her mother’s death. "This statement suggests that living with someone else’s death can be more painful that dying."
this book is perfect! its full of action, mystery, fantasy, and a crazy ending!
my favorite quote was this! " alas i look upon the moon and wish i was with sapphire. she brought a scenes of relief and safety to me and Brom! yet i still wish i could just run away and leave this new faith of mine!
Death Collector By: Just-in Rich-ards "They were walking too slowly to be as casual and at ease as they tried to appear" pg 7 R:I think Just-in provides excellent visual details(metaphorically) that how a person walks while stalking some one.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Page #1 "In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this haven't had the advantages you had." I feel that this piece of advice that the main character was given to by his father will continue to follow him regardless whether his father is there or not. I predict this piece of advice will be a major theme that the plot will thrive off of.
"Then, releasing his grip on the other man's collar , he glanced anxiously toward the cliff-top ,waiting to see if there was any sign that the rower's clattering and yelling had been heard. The entire raiding party waited in silence for several minutes. Then, as there was no sound of the alarm being raised about them, there there was a general release of tension." pg. 24 Ranger's Apprentice: Erak's Ransom.
(P) This is strange because if the city had any sort of guards or surveillance they would have definitely heard all the racket that he made. It makes it very suspicious and i think that maybe the guy they bought the information on from may have tipped the city off. I think that the reason that no one sounded an alarm is because they set a trap.
Sounds like a good book, I like the descriptive words the author uses in this quote. I would definitely want to read this book, you should keep reading to find out if it's a trap or not.
"With her eyes back on the city, Kale talked aloud. 'In a week we'll be going to The Hall. I'll be a servant of the people then, not a slave. That's higher class than I ever dreamed of being. Fancy food, fancy clothes, fancy education.'" page 3 (Q) What is The Hall? Why is Kale going there? Why did she leave to go to The Hall? Why was Kale a slave in the first place. Why was she realeased from being a slave to go to the city?
I would be just as curious as you are about these things. Those are very good questions to ask, especially since it is the beginning of the book, so I would be very curious also.
Page 1-- “Like most people, I didn’t meet and talk to Rant Casey until after he was dead. Thats how it works for most celebrities; After they croak, their circle of close friends just explodes. A dead celebrity can’t walk down the street without meeting a million best buddies he never met in real life.”
Its the first couple sentences of the first paragraph and who i had assumed was the main character is already dead. However it does leave me to wonder why the narrator thinks of Rant as a celebrity. Why is it that Rant and his death are so noteworthy to the narrator.
Passage-"That was a long time ago, but it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out. Looking back now, I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years."
(C) This is a saying that I hear often, that the past is the past and we should forget it and move on. The truth is it's never really gone. I discovered that you will find yourself running into these past events at some point in your life and face it if you haven't before, and come to closure with it if possible.
I'm really loving this book its so sad . I haven't yet seen the movie but i am planing on watching it after i finis reading the book. just by reading the book i can tell i will cry in the movie . there is times where the book almost makes me cry. Its so sad but love it !
“You look invincible,' my mother said one night. I loved these times, when we seemed to feel the same thing. I turned to her, wrapped in my thin gown, and said: I am.”
When i was reading this quote i felt like if i was going to cry i cant imagine me or my mother gone and leaving each other .i just cant .
Maybe...you'll fall in love with me all over again." "Hell," I said, "I love you enough now. What do you want to do? Ruin me?" "Yes. I want to ruin you." "Good," I said. "That's what I want too.” at this point, they have recognized that their relationship is nothing but a game. They both decided to play this game only because it is a great distraction from the other harsh problems around them (like the war and his injury.) Hemingway also portrays Henry and Catherine to be a bit sarcastic yet honest. They both have strong feelings for each other and this is a point where they have been extremely (or maybe too) direct with their feelings.
I think its funny how we see people, well teenagers, that do this and we are astonished. Their are a ton of movies out there that portray the partying teenagers and the careless parents.
"my colleague and I hadn’t found a soul who had seen or talked to the guy or his family in years. Then, when we had pretty much thrown in the towel, we stumbled on his mother’s apartment more or less by accident and, voilĂ , there was the “hermit,” dressed in a sports jacket and Italian loafers, evidently having lunch and watching soccer on TV."
I enjoy that part because that will be me in the future after my being all famous and such, but of course i won't be forgotten. You know.
"She turned back to the mirror. I stood right behind her. "Hey!" I cried again. Finally, she looked up. My eyes darted to the mirror to meet her gaze. But when I looked into the glass, I screamed.
Because Emma looked exactly like me. And I wasn't there."
Right as the story started out, I'm confused. All I know is this girl's name is Sutton Mercer and she claims to be at a frat party barely waking up in a "claw-foot" bathtub and all of a sudden some random girl walks in and she can't see her. To then finally realizing she IS her? Interesting.

Pg.

Passage: “Nana looked so mad that Mariam feared the jinn would enter her mother's body again. But the jinn didn't come, not that time. Instead, Nana grabbed Mariam by the wrists, pulled her close, and, through gritted teeth, said, "You are a clumsy little harami. This is my reward for everything I've endured. An heirloom-breaking, clumsy little harami."”
(C)- This passage of the book represents the cultural and religious aspect of the book.
DeleteThis seems like it will be a good book, and that's a good start. I wonder how culture is going to affect what happens in the rest of the book.

Comments: Emma- the main character, who thought this- lost her mother when she was younger, Emma looked up to her.
DeleteI feel like the author uses this death of a close family member to connect to any readers that possibly lost a loved and is trying to help them deal with the loss and to show the development of the character and even be foreshadowing how shes going to later in the book

I think the author is trying to say that people can change over time mostly to fit in, and they change everything about them because other people do it too, and she talks about that when she sees this group of people that she used to hang out with, she realizes what they really are and that she's really glad she changed and became more focused on what really matters like college rather than parties and fitting in.
I completely agree with you on this one. People do change over time, changing to fit in just because that's the way society wants us to be or thinks we are.

ReplyDelete"My dad doesn't care what we do in here."
Pg. 5
DeleteSome parents are just like that. And drinking at a young age doesn't mean she doesn't have respect for herself. I know parents who are fine with their children or other people at their house doing much worse than that.
DeleteSome parents allow their kids to do whatever they want and they come out as potheads or drunks later in life or sometimes they're parents allow them to just drink and stuff.

(R) Cooner uses this quote to start her book "skinny." Reading it I under stand that the main character is overweight and she has been struggling with it since her mom died.

I didn’t even try. That’s the part that haunts me most.

"Jack Reacher ordered espresso, double, no peel, no cube, foam cup, no china, and before it arrived at his table he saw a man's life change forever.

I feel like Adam, the main character of the story, is being portrayed as having a serious inner conflict with himself. His use of diction reflects on the depressing mentality he has. As opposed to how one might think, his rockstar life is rather more depressing than a lively one. (E) This is how the book starts, the very first paragraph and right off the bat the narrator is talking about basically hurting herself very badly to the point of even killing herself. "Stories about The Cardinal were as legion as the corpses buried in the city's concrete foundations........

ReplyDelete"One day I brought a stck of books mostly banned in decent LDS
households, to the check out counter.
Ms.Rose looked up and smiled.
You are quite the reader, Pattyn.
You'll be a writer one day. I'll venture.
I shook my head, "Not me
who'd want to read anything I have to say?""
(R)Reflection:
When I was in sixth grade my english teacher was this really American looking teacher, blonde hair blue eyes and everything.
Which also brings a quote by Robert Bresson to mind:
“Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen.”
Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder
ReplyDeletePassages from the text: "Once again dark hallways and no one to help me.
"The Secret Life Of Bees"by "Sue Monk Kidd."
ReplyDeletepg:2 "People who think dying is the worst thing don't know a thing about life."Lily

R:I think Just-in provides excellent visual details(metaphorically) that how a person walks while stalking some one.

"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this haven't had the advantages you had."
I feel that this piece of advice that the main character was given to by his father will continue to follow him regardless whether his father is there or not. I predict this piece of advice will be a major theme that the plot will thrive off of.
i like it because i feel like any person can relate to it and it seems like it could easily be a good piece of advice for anyone.

The entire raiding party waited in silence for several minutes. Then, as there was no sound of the alarm being raised about them, there there was a general release of tension." pg. 24 Ranger's Apprentice: Erak's Ransom.
ReplyDelete(P) This is strange because if the city had any sort of guards or surveillance they would have definitely heard all the racket that he made.
Delete"With her eyes back on the city, Kale talked aloud. 'In a week we'll be going to The Hall. I'll be a servant of the people then, not a slave. That's higher class than I ever dreamed of being. Fancy food, fancy clothes, fancy education.'"
ReplyDeletepage 3
(Q) What is The Hall?

I discovered that you will find yourself running into these past events at some point in your life and face it if you haven't before, and come to closure with it if possible.

i love this quote because it makes perfect sense and those who can understand the meaning behind it can definitely relate to it .

ReplyDelete“You look invincible,' my mother said one night.
I loved these times, when we seemed to feel the same thing. I turned to her, wrapped in my thin gown, and said:
I am.”
When i was reading this quote i felt like if i was going to cry i cant imagine me or my mother gone and leaving each other .i just cant .
I like how you felt what the author was intending for you to feel. It seems to be a good book if it can touch you emotionally.
DeleteMaybe...you'll fall in love with me all over again."
ReplyDelete"Hell," I said, "I love you enough now. What do you want to do? Ruin me?"
"Yes. I want to ruin you."
"Good," I said. "That's what I want too.”
at this point, they have recognized that their relationship is nothing but a game.

ReplyDelete"my colleague and I hadn’t found a soul who had seen or talked to the guy or his family in years.
You know.
