Passages from the text: "Once again dark hallways and no one to help me. I run, looking for a door outside. I can't run as fast as I want to. He's behind me. Running. Chasing me. He moves toward me. Closer. And closer. Then, he's there. In front of me. He lunges for me and I scream his name, "Gabe!"

Comments & Questions: (Q) Brooklyn got chasing by Gabe's ghost who was her friend. Brooklyn was running away in her dream. I got lots of questions in my head when I read this quote. Why would she want to run away in her dream? Why did Gabe's ghost chase her? What did he want from her? Why it wasn't Lucca, her boyfriend, visiting her dreams. I think later on the plot will be really interesting.
Maybe Brooklyn knows what happened to her friend but wouldn't tell anybody, or Gabe has a message for her or something. Just predicting here, because sometimes people get messages that are helpful through their dreams. Overall good quote and your questions are really interesting, I would want to know why too.
The way this paragraph is structured with stop and go short sentences builds suspense and makes it more intriguing and anticipating. Sounds like an interesting read.
pg. 56 "How did your father die?" asked Tegay, with a gruff sort of sympathy. "A tree fell on him" said Rigg. Pg. 65 "Father wouldn't let me see him, dying with tree pressing on him, so I wouldn't have to live with the memory."
Commentary: I have serious doubts about the validity of Rigg's father's death. It's too suspicious to have been crushed by a tree and then ask your son not to see you die. Maybe I don't believe it because it's a pretty lame way to die, especially if it's the major event that's shifts the main character's life out of order so that his Hero's Journey begins. I expect the father to come back at some point because he's such a mysterious character.
First, let me just say: Orson Scott Card? Great author! Second: Yeah, I agree. I don't think his dad died like that. Card likes to give a LOT of depth and character development to his characters, and it wouldn't surprise me if he gave his main character, Rigg, a couple of lies and secrets he has to hold onto throughout the duration of the story.
I feel like this could be in two ways he could either be lying or telling the truth. He could be lying because his father died in a horrific or controversial way or he could be telling the truth to maybe show the relationship between Rigg and dad you know...maybe...just sayin...
Even if it was true i see both sides of telling the son to leave so he wont be scared for life but i the same time maybe he wanted to spend his last moment with him
"By then I'd given up on starving myself. If you'd wanted to poison me, you have done it already. But I can't say I enjoyed the meal. Of course, you noticed. Anything to do with my health you always noticed." pg.46
Q: The biggest question I have here is, why did he kidnap her for?? All he does is treat her right. He cares for her, and has everything that is necessary for her to survive and live a normal life.
The repetition of two consecutive question mark emphasizes the intent of the quote, good job! May I just ask to write a little more for the love of english!
My sister's read this book before, I think! She liked it, if I remember correctly...anyway, great quote! I think that it's odd too: Why would a kidnapper kidnap someone, only to take care of them? The way I see it, there's two ways this could go... 1) This guy has a mental disorder, and he just wants a kid of his own tp care for, so he finds a kid, kidnaps her, and tries to care for her like his own. 2) This guy is like the witch in Hansel and Gretel. He cares for the girl, only as a deception and a diversion. Then, when her back is turned, and she least expects it? WHAM-O! He strikes and kills her.
That's just my take on it, anyway, though. Can't wait to see what happens next! :-D
“He wore his innocence like a comfortable old coat.”
Page 26
Commentary: I feel like this is describing how Mr. Harvey, the killer, has killed Susie and has gotten away with it so often that he almost believes his own innocence. How can he live knowing that he has killed an innocent person? How does he look and talk to Susie's family? Why does he do that? What I obviously now is that he has no feelings, or he might have, but they're broken.
do you think he could have a mental disability? Usually people who lie so much tend to even believe their own lies. I do understand your point about him talking to her parents and how he acts so calm, but he must be used to it.
Psychopaths are typically profoundly selfish and lack emotion. In lay terms, psychopaths seem to have little or no conscience, also they are known for being cunning and manipulative. So maybe Mr. Harvey is a pssychopath, that has no emotion or regret whatsoever in killing Susie.
I've watched the movie but movies are nothing compared to the book. It's so interesting to see how a man can live on with his life so "normally" after committing a cruel murder. He's a sociopath who is somehow forgetting the horrible thing he has done.
Great commentary. i like how you included specific detail to help someone who hasn't read the book to understand what you are talking about and not be lost in space.
I really love that quote because it shows that his man is really a psychopath with no remorse for killing her. I find it really frightening that he can live so close to her family and act like nothing happened after what he did. This man is truly deranged.
Commentary: This reminds me of myself when i was in 8th grade because i began to grown really fast and when i bought clothes 2 weeks later they wouldn't fit anymore. I can relate to the main character in so many ways so it makes me feel like im in the book.
I see how you can relate yourself to the character. Lol that's adorable. What things did he try to do that made him look like he was growing fast? Do you think he was doing it to fit in? Or did he have another reasons to?
Maybe you should have quoted a little more so we could understand what you are coming from? That quote doesn't really explain much of what is going on in the story...
Trash By Andy Mulligan "'You found the wallet in the bag? You cant lie to me' 'No!' I said 'No!' " Pg.18 (Q) Why doesn't his aunt believe him the fist time? she does ask him multiple times and he respond the same way. Do they have a history of lying to each other or is the aunt just afraid of the cops?
Maybe she has trust issues? The fact that she is related to him must mean that she either does not trust everyone she knows or just him. It would be interesting if the book reveals her issues as its plot progresses.
Page 215. "Besides, I like having her recount the day to me. I like how Kim is talking to me normally, like Gran did earlier, just jabbering on, spinning a good yarn, as if we were together on my porch, drinking coffee and catching up."
(E): I think that Mia is missing how her life was before everything happened and it all got so complicated. That she misses her actual life, even though it has only been a day, she misses just going over her entire day with her best friend, as an everyday activity. And having Kim talk to her like nothing even is wrong, makes Mia feel better, because everything actually is wrong. She is happy that at least this conversation makes her new life not real.
The way the friends interact after this life altering event could be seen through how they talk and to her her friend is like a connection to her old life and shes something familiar in something so alternate and different and just talking about everything with each other is comforting for her.
I believe your absolutely right as well as Jacob being right. Sometimes we as humans, do little things that other people notice that may not be important to us, but for them it means a lot. It can relate to how its better to cherish the things you have before they are gone type of thing. I think there is a strong connection between Mia and Kim and Mia wants a friendship like the once she had, I wonder what will happen next !
"Emma" by. Jane Austen Quote: "What are Harriet Smith claims, either of birth, nature or education,... She is the natural daughter of nobody knows whom, with probably no settled provision at all...she has been taught nothing useful... she is pretty, and she is good-tempered, and that is all." pg(58) Comments: Here Mr. Knightly, is ranting about how Ms. Smith is simple and a nobody. Prior to this rant Ms. Smith, was proposed to by a Mr. Martin. Mr. Knightly, is upset with how Harriet refused Mr. Martin. My question is why is Mr. Knightly upset that she refused? He wasn't asked into matrimony, and why should he care who Harriet marries? And why is he being so rude towards her?
I really love what you've written Lacey, you're very direct with your words and back them up greatly! The connection of your sentences correspond greatly with your book, good job!
Kill Switch Chris Lynch Pg.9 Quote "'Its because of your memory, Da' I say. And because I always relished the challenge of making him laugh, and the thrill when I succeeded, I add, "Your memory, Old Boy, remember your memory?" Response: Wow it really shows that Daniel cares about his grandfather and he is trying to make the best of his memory loss problem. He wants him to be as happy as possible because it hurts him to see his grandfather confused trying to figure out what just happened.
What is his memory about? Is it a memory worth keeping? & Why is his grandfather hurt? Did his grandchild do something to hurt him & now he's trying to make up for it?
Passage from the text:Trey's mind was a mess of tumbling thoughts and emotions. One second he'd been sitting listening to Lucien telling him things about his parents, the next he was being physically propelled through the corridors of the care home as if his very life depended on it. Questions: One of my questions would be about this Lucien guy, how was he able to physically propel Trey out of the doors? Also, What else does he know about Trey and his issues, and how is he going to help him deal with them?
I agree with Ulonna, I think those all happened in Trey's head. This quote is interesting, I really want to know what really happen to him. Is he a normal guy or he is a super nature like werewolf that kind of man?? I think the author is going to give the answer of who he really is.
"My father's eyes burn into mine with a look of accusation. At first, when I feel the heat behind my eyes, I think he's found a way to set me on fire, to punish me for what I've done, but no - I'm about to cry."

(Q) Why does Beatrice's father have a disapproving look towards her and not her brother who now is an Erudite? Is it because she went from Abnegation to Dauntless? Why is her father so upset about this while her mother is just standing there smiling?
"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
"Sherlock Holmes' quick eye took in my occupation, and he shook his head with a smile as he noticed my questioning glances."
Page #34
Question: Why does Sherlock Holmes understand so well Dr. Watson even with a look/glance? Is it obvious that Sherlock Holmes has developed a new way to view people with just his senses? If so, then why doesn't he ditch Watson and view the investigations on his own? I believe his interpretation of life is extensively different from what the average person is capable of, not only is he a step ahead of us, he's a full 2 miles without a trace.
That is creepy but i guess it's Sherlock being Sherlock. he could need Watson so that people won't suspect him to know that he has those kind of senses or maybe he just needs a friend and partner in crime, haven't read the book so I'm just guessing.
Well Sherlock Homes is notably one of the greatest investigator/detective in the world! The fact that Watson has been Homes' buddy for so long might have something to do with the way he understands him with a glance, but maybe he's got super awesome senses and can "see" you. Or maybe he has a sixth sense all together.
""Mr. Lane will want to hear it direct." Reacher checked his cup again. "Where is he?" "Not far. Ten minutes." "I don't know," Reacher said. "I'm enjoying my espresso." "Bring it with you. It's in a foam cup." "I prefer peace and quiet." "All I want is ten minutes." "Seems like a lot of fuss over a stolen car, even if it was a Mercedes Benz." "This is not about the car." "What is it about?" "Life and death," Gregory said. "Right now more likely death than life.""
Page 8, Chapter 1
(Q) I have one question: what is this life and death situation? Also, who is Mr. Lane? This story is getting very suspenseful, and it's starting to have more mysteries unfold, just as we think one gets solve. Lee Child is pretty notorious for that, actually. He makes Reacher so able to predict the future, analyze a situation, and Reacher will be the first to notice one speck of dust out of place, but he's human. Sometimes he's not always correct, so when he is wrong? It's a HUGE plot-shift and a HUGE deal in the story, because the novel is now going in an unexpected turn...but anyway, yep! That's my blog.
Look for me by moonlight by Mary Downing Hahn Quote- "'Todd made a face."His fingers are as cold as ice..." I patted Todd on the shoulder, hoping to cheer him up."Mr. Morthanos loves our snowman." "He just said that to make me like him." Todd scowled "which I don't and won't no matter what he says or does. You mustn't like him either Cynda!". pg 50
Response- I'm not really superstitious but I know when to heed to the warning of the little kid, because they say that children have a sense that most grown people don't. The author uses this little child's statement to foreshadow the ill that will fall upon those who do not listen to him just because he is a little kid that has a very active imagination. Sometimes I also get feelings that something isn't right, and sometimes I always end up being right about someone or something. This is just the beginning of the main conflict of the novel, the author is doing a good job building up to the next plot. And this book is so not what I expected. I'm scared.
Children are pure and sensitive; they really can tell who likes them for real. They would like the people who really like them, and ignore the rest of hypocritical people. I like this quote even though it was just the beginning of the main conflict. From that quote I can see through kids' inner world.
"burned" By: Ellen Hopkins "In my view, having babies was suppost to be something beautiful, not a duty. Something incredible, not role-playing. Bringing new life into this dying world, promising hope for a saner tomorrow. As I saw it, any expectations of sanity rested in a woman's womb. God should have given Eve another chance. Instead, He turned her away, no way to make the world better. (E) I wonder what caused her to think like this... Not only females give birth, male seahorses are the one's who get pregnant too :) So far what she's trying to say , i guess, is that this world is too cruel to bring beautiful life into it.
I think what she means is that, because of eve we have pain whenever we give birth and according to her it was not supposed to be like that. And by role-playing she is pointing out that only females give birth and not men. Keep reading so you can find out why she thinks like this.
i think she means that the meaning of being a mother is changing trough time and women do not get pregnant because they want to anymore they just get pregnant in accident
I think she's questioning why women have to be the ones to give birth, to go through the pain of it. In her situation, women are inferior and stuck at home doing chores and having children. She hates that, hates that she's confined to that role in life and wants something else.
"The Secret Life Of Bees" by:Sue Monk Kidd. pg: 16: “Please, Lily, you are insulting your fine intelligence. Do you have any idea how smart you are?” --
I don't understand why she quote this, but i like it. I'm guessing Lily’s teacher says this to her when Lily mentions that she wants to be a hairdresser. And this is an important quotation because it shows that Lily’s self-esteem is low from living with T. Ray and that believing in someone can be very powerful. After Mrs. Henry says this to Lily, Lily believes she can be a writer and practices whenever she can.
I think that this shows that Lily doesn't think she's all that smart, which is something many people can relate to. But whoever is speaking obviously believes otherwise.
I LOVE THIS BOOK! :D I think Lily's teachers is trying to encourage her to do something she's good at and to not beat herself down. Her teacher probably feels like she's not making her talent useful.
What Happened to Goodbye by: Sarah Dessen “It was amazing how you could get so far from where you'd planned, and yet find it was exactly were you needed to be.”
I feel like this perfectly describes our situation as Seniors. Freshman year you viewed the world so differently then you do now. I for sure can confirm everything I wanted to do and accomplish as a Freshmen has changed now that I'm a Senior. You never know what life leads you to, it can be bad or good but it happens for a reason. And it always lead to what you're destined to do.
I like how you found a way to relate it to everyone so everyone can have an idea of where you are coming from with this quote. try to add a bit more detail from the story in your response so people can understand the book as well.
"The other thing about Kaitlyn, I guess, was that it could never again feel natural to talk to her. Any attempts to feign normal social interactions were just depressing because it was so glaringly obvious that everyone that I spoke to for the rest of my life would feel awkward and self-conscious around me, except maybe little kids like Jackie who just didn't know any better. Anyway, I really did like being alone. I liked being alone with poor Staff Sergeant Max Mayhem, who--oh, come on, he's not going to survive these seventeen bullet wounds, is he? (Spoiler alert: He lives.)"
-Pg.47
(C) I agree with Hazel, the main character, that sometimes people are weird or feel awkward around you when they don’t know or feel what you do. Sometimes things like books, TV, and in Hazels case, kids, can be your “safe place/thing” that provides comfort and warmth. Is there some foreshadowing at whether she survives her terminal cancer when she talks about Sgt. Mayhem? I can’t wait to find out!
"The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston Pg 10- "He began to look like a zombie. His appearance frightened the temporary housekeeper. She didn't understand the transformation in this man. His personality changed. He became sullen, resentful, angry, and his memory seemed to be blown away."
I like how the author used so many specific details. It really shows you his condition is so bad, and makes me think of him almost like a corpse. I predict that he will die soon.
I do agree with you Stephen, I as well like how the author uses specific details to really depict the scenario. It's kind of crazy how to think back in the day diseases would be so bad to the point where people would be so sick that they almost did look like zombies ! but i'm wondering what will happen next? will he live or die??
Quote: " There it was then, the bass strings like govoreeting (to speak or talk) away from under my bed at the rest of the orchestra, and then the male human goloss (voice) coming in and telling and telling them all to be joyful, and then the lovely blissful tune all about Joy being a glorious spark like heaven, and then i felt the old tigers leap in me and then I leapt on these two young ptitsas(chicks).
Page(42)
(E) This "Utopia" is not only supposed to enhance the world surrounding the people but also behaviors of the people. But people in this dystopia are reduced to their primal instincts.
Quote: " I felt something febrile growing inside of me. It felt alive and inevitable, the way a puke with a nasty hangover sometimes is. I felt it itching its way through my body, begging for the release, until it finally came tearing out of me with such force that I punched my wall, and then, when that didn't hurt enough, my window." - pg. 66
I feel like the character is starting to build a sense of inner conflict as well as a person to person conflict. This interests me because I feel like it creates suspense in the story and it can relate to people. It can relate to people not in the sense that they are violent when they are angry, but rather it reflects how a person may have so much bottled up inside that they have a potential of breaking down, making this book even more intriguing because it has those scenarios that connect to people. In a way it also sends that message that everyone breaks down at one point, inevitably, but its okay to do so, making it so easy to relate to this character.
Rangers Apprentice: Erak's Ransom " "Well I'm not dancing," Will said through gritted teeth. "I don't know how." "Oh yes you are," Alyss told him. "Let's hope you're a fast learner." " pg. 39
(C) I Like this quote because I can totally relate to how Will refuses to dance but is going to have to do it anyways. I've been in this exact same situation so I know what its like to be forced to dance with no prior knowledge on how to do it.
"The grawligs gave a roar and charged. ...The grawligs hopped around amid yips and howls but didn't give up." pages 34-35 (Q) Why do the grawligs go around randomly attacking people in the forests? What did the people do to the grawligs to make them want to attack people?
Passage From The Text "I want to stand in front of the crowd at the next year's musical and have them clap at my success. But then right before I let myself drift off to sleep, I hear it. A whisper in my dreamy, sleepy ear. Louder. Louder. Louder. "It will never happen."

Comments & Questions (Q) Why does she let "skinny" put her down? Is "skinny" her conscious ? Is skinny going to "survive" the surgery?
Page 11-- “You might see Middleton from the air, flying between New York and Los Angeles, and you’ll always wonder how people could exist in such a place. Envision ratty sofas abandoned on porches. Cars parked in front yards. Houses halve of their foundation, balanced on cinder blocks, with chickens and dogs sleeping underneath. If it looks like a natural disaster has occurred, thats only because you didn’t see it before
Again how is it that someone that lived in such a small town nobody would ever bother to learn about be an important enough person to be treated like a celebrity after death? whatever he did must have been one big dramatic event.
"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini (Page 33) Quote- ""What a stupid girl you are! You think you matter to him, that you're wanted in his house? You think you're a daughter to him? That he's going to take you in? Let me tell you something. A man's heart is a wretched, wretched thing, Mariam. It isn't like a mother's womb. It won't bleed, it won't stretch to make room for you. I'm the only one who loves you. I'm all you have in this world, Mariam, and when I'm gone you'll have nothing. You'll have nothing. You are nothing!""
(R)-I think that the way Nana reacted is quite natural. It is clear that Nana is afraid of having Mariam spend too much time with Jalil and her siblings made her feel a bit uneasy. She is obviously afraid of losing Mariam and she clearly finds Jalil to be a threat. She is beginning to question Mariam's sudden interest in Jalil.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Page 12: "I told him. And as I walked on I was lonely no longer. I was a guide, a pathfinder, an original settler. He had casually conferred on me the freedom of the neighborhood." I feel as if the main character has a desire to feel needed. He gets a feeling of sanctification when given a purpose and feels lonely without that purpose. I guess everyone can relate to that in their own way. I predict that his need to be needed will be one of many conflicts that he will face as the book progresses.
I read this book last year and I fell in love with it. Nick felt lucky enough to have Gatsby by his side. But I think you can see a hint of Gastby's selfishness. He kinda uses Nick just to get a hold of Daisy. ALSO do not watch the new movie. It was horrible compared to the book!
"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. Page (10) Passage- "Tears were sliding down his cheeks. I reached across my seat, slung my arm around him, pulled him close. He rested his head on my shoulder. "He took you for someone else," I whispered. "He took you for someone else.""
(Q)- What happened to Hasan's mom? Why was he bullied my everyone around him because of her disappearance? Why did she elope?
When you think about atheism, you directly think about 'No God.' People who are smart and who think(in his eyes) are people who are not dumb enough to believe in a religion or who have certain faiths. This can also lead to the fact that the ignorant group of people are people who do believe in Gods.
(C) "In a school as small as ours, you know the names of everyone in your class." pg.# 21 I can connect with this because my school is also small and you know almost everyone in here.
"He wrote, “John Nash’s story gives me hope that one day the world will come back to me too.”
That shows how inspirational other's life struggles can inspire others with similar problems even when that person doesn't realize how much they inspire others.
Quote: "Heart breaking, I think that if Dad, staring down the sight of a 10mm, would only tell me he loves me. I could easily change my mind...but he won't."
Page: 530-531
(Q): This is the very last page of the book, leaving a huge cliffhanger. Is Pattyn really going to go through with this? Is she really going to kill her dad? I know that throughout the story, he was abusive and a horrible drunk, but I really wonder if she is going to really go through with it. I wonder if he broke her so much that she feels the only way is killing him.
" Their love lasted four wonderful years...The only thing missing was a child. And that was when it all went to hell."
(E) It showed me that even though they loved each other for a long time there was still something that separate them. They wanted a child and tried for a long time. They tried praying healing anything possible but nothing worked. They got frustrated and ended up separating.
"I haven't heard from you all day." Garrett handed Emma a red plastic cup filled with liquid. "I called, I texted... where have you been?" "I'm right here!" I wanted to scream. Brief flashes of kisses, hand-holding, and prom slow dances with Garrett flitted in and out of my brain. I distinctly heard the words I love you. A longing feeling struck me hard."
After the last quote basically what's happening is that this girl Sutton is still "following" around Emma. Actually there twins, well at least I think? I don't get how she isn't being seen & she practically is like an author for Emma talking about what she's doing & having her own reaction towards the situation. It's weird thought because if there twins then why is the other girl doing with her ex? Shady.

DeleteGreat commentary. i like how you included specific detail to help someone who hasn't read the book to understand what you are talking about and not be lost in space.

Maybe she has trust issues? The fact that she is related to him must mean that she either does not trust everyone she knows or just him. It would be interesting if the book reveals her issues as its plot progresses.

DeleteI believe your absolutely right as well as Jacob being right. Sometimes we as humans, do little things that other people notice that may not be important to us, but for them it means a lot.

Response-
I'm not really superstitious but I know when to heed to the warning of the little kid, because they say that children have a sense that most grown people don't.

So far what she's trying to say , i guess, is that this world is too cruel to bring beautiful life into it.
she seems mad due to the last sentence. I wonder what got her like this
DeleteI think what she means is that, because of eve we have pain whenever we give birth and according to her it was not supposed to be like that. And by role-playing she is pointing out that only females give birth and not men. Keep reading so you can find out why she thinks like this.
Deletei think she means that the meaning of being a mother is changing trough time and women do not get pregnant because they want to anymore they just get pregnant in accident
DeleteI think she's questioning why women have to be the ones to give birth, to go through the pain of it. In her situation, women are inferior and stuck at home doing chores and having children. She hates that, hates that she's confined to that role in life and wants something else.
